Dulce Et Decorum Est - Poem by Wilfred Owen

-->

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned out backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.-
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

(It is sweet and glorious to die for the fatherland.)

Expressing the futility of war...

45 Life Lessons by Regina Brett

View Hugh Jones's profile on LinkedIn

This is something we should all read at least once a week.  Make sure you read to the end!

Written by Regina Brett, born in 1956  of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio.

To find out more about Regina Brett click here>>>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regina_Brett,

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written.

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends andparents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journeyis all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; Godnever blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is upto you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no foran answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don'tsave it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, willthis matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did ordidn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'dgrab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come...

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

In Memory Of Peter Caddick 23 May 1943 ~ 23 November 2011

We’ll See You Later

Hey big man, you’ve gone and left without saying your goodbyes
“Well, I’m still around!”  I hear you say, “I thought you’d realise”
“That I’ve not gone, I’m here and there, within you and without”
“So if you need to speak to me, all you’ve got to do is shout!”
“And I’ll listen carefully to all your words and assist you if I can”
“I’ll do my best to help you hear, wise words from this old man!”
“Dream your dreams and fulfil them, each and every day”
“Go for gold and do your best, you have often heard me say”
“It still stands good, so remember them and by doing, honour me”
“Shed no more tears, for a life I’ve loved.  Because now my soul is free”

You’ve left your mark and enhanced our lives, what legacy could be greater?
Thank you Peter Edward C – I know we’ll see you later!

Rest well, dear friend.

With love from
 Hugh

My Mother

On April 11th this year my Mum would have been 88 years old. There are lots of women who live to be this age nowadays, but for Patricia Catherine Jones (nee Bryant), her life was to end at a mere 71 having suffered for 6 years with Alzheimers.

So, in a very real sense, we lost her twice, Dad, Nina and I. She was lost to us when she ceased to comprehend who we were and then again when she slipped away, hopefully to regain full self consciousness in the next world.

Nevertheless, it was hard to bear for all of us and there is rarely a day goes by that she is not far from our thoughts. Just before she died I wrote a poem to her, for her, but of course she never read it in this life. I like to think that she looked over my shoulder in the next one and read it then. Here it is, for me really, to tell whoever reads this, how much she meant to me...

My Mother

(born 11th April 1921 – died 4th January 1993)

Shining light that shone so bright
To illuminate my world,
A beacon in my darkest hours
When my weaknesses unfurled.
You gave me Love when Love was lost
And Hope when there was none,
You helped me look beyond myself
Gave me the Will to carry on.
You made me laugh when I would cry
And to think when I would not.
You always sought the truth from me
And you knew when I would lie.
Sometimes you made me feel ashamed
Of the things I’d done or said
Yet always you were there for me
To show the way ahead
And lead me from my waywardness.
You shared my Hopes and Dreams and Fears,
You cooked and cleaned and washed my clothes
And dried away my tears.
You stood by me when I let you down,
As I was prone to do
And forgave me for my churlishness
When I was rude to you.
You gave yourself to me and mine
And helped us on our way,
I know my wife is grateful
For that week you came to stay
So long ago when we were young
And felt we couldn’t cope
With a new born babe’s demands on us,
But in fact you gave us Hope,
By doing what you did so well.
So thankful am I that I had You,
I would not have wished for any other
Person in this world than You,
To have as my Friend and Confidante,
To Love and call “My Mother”.

I'll See You In My Dreams

For Babsy.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

A great version of a geat George Harrison number. Brings a lump to my throat.

Anglesey Aug 2008

This is the cottage where my grandfather (Taid) was born in 1869. I was named after him, Hugh Jones was one of 11 children (9 girls and 2 boys). His father was a quarryman. The house was called Llein Swch (which means "Tip of the ploughshare")

This is a memorial statue at Moelfre of a famous lifeboatman - Dic Evans

Beatles Day - July 10th 2008 - Liverpool

Click on title to read the review in Daily Telegraph.

On Thursday July 10th, Babs and I attended the Beatles Imagine concert at the Echo Arena. It was in aid of charity for Alder Hey hospital and Rhys Jones who tragically lost his life on August 22nd last year.

It was a night of memories for all of us who were teenagers in the 60's. The whole set was enhanced by the Backbeat Beatles who reproduced the magic of the fab four as well, if not better, than any Beatles tribute band I have seen.

The first half of the concert was hosted by Ricky (Royle Family) Tomlinson and his wisecracks about "zimmer frames and bus passes" each time he introduced a Liverpool personality from the Merseybeat era, kept the audience amused. Ricky even joined the original Quarrymen for a rendition of Maggie Mae with his trusty banjo!

The second half was hosted by Liverpool's own radio personality Billy Butler and he got in on the act as well with his version of Yellow Submarine (don't give up the day job Billy!)

The highlight for Babs and I was "In My Life" which was voted the best Beatles song of all time by the people of Liverpool in an Echo poll, winning more than 23% of the votes.

It was a great night and we hope that this will become an annual event in Liverpool. The Beatles did more for this city in the last century than anyone else. (Take note Ringo when you make your daft remarks!)

It was great to see Tony Crane and Billy Kingsley performing together and although it was a tribute to the Beatles, we would have loved to have heard "Sorrow" or "Don't Turn Around" too.

The finale featured the whole ensemble singing "All You Need Is Love". Thanks to everyone who organised and performed in a great night of nostalgia for the best band ever!

Senior moments part 3 - Agnes and Mildred

Agnes and Mildred were getting ready to go out for their weekly game of bridge when Agnes noticed that Mildred had something odd in her ear.

"Why Mildred, I do believe you have got a suppository in your ear!" exclaimed Agnes.

"Aah!" said Mildred. "Now I know where my hearing aid is!"
